Gravity est un projet conjoint de Camille Rousseau et Kim Coiffier. Complices de longue date, les deux artistes s’emparent, à l’occasion des 15 ans de l’agence d’architecture Fresh, du volume des lieux pour défier les lois de l’apesanteur. Porcelaine et bois en suspension forment une constellation d’étoiles et de satellites, flottant le long de la vitrine où miroitent les frondaisons du parc des Buttes-Chaumont voisin. En écho aux formes de kaolin dont le mouvement léger teinte comme des clochettes cristallines, Camille propose deux imposantes et étranges palmes, entre objets rituels et voiles de bateaux dont l’imaginaire pourrait renvoyer au lointain Pacifique. Pour ce faire, elle s’appuie sur la matière délicate du mûrier à papier (Broussonetia papyrifera), appelé aussi mûrier de Chine, un arbuste originaire d’Asie où depuis des siècles, son écorce filamenteuse est utilisée dans la fabrication de textiles ou d’un papier recherché par les calligraphes. Patiemment cousues puis teintes, ses fibres fragiles et cassantes reflètent la lumière et, associées à d’autres mobiles du même mûrier blanchi, elles proposent, dans un jeu de tensions et de textures, une cartographie vivante et onirique. Une ode à l’équilibre et à la légèreté.
Fresh Architectures presents ‘Matter in Suspension’ with carte blanche to the artist Camille Rousseau to design and curate an exhibition based on theme of GRAVITY. To extend the scope of ‘matter’, Camille Rousseau invited the artist Kim Coiffier to contribute her work. Kim’s medium of choice was: Porcelain, where 120 unique porcelain pieces were produced and individually hung, to create a vertical eye catcher. Camille Rousseau’s production focused on the medium of the Mulberry tree bark and the paper produced from this bark. Echoing the shapes of porcelain whose slight movement tints like crystalline bells, Camille offers two imposing and strange palms, between ritual objects and boat sails. The bark and the kaolin gravitate in the large volume of the agency and form a constellation of stars and satellites, floating along the window where the foliage of the neighboring Buttes-Chaumont park shimmers. The works will meet and defy the laws of weightlessness in the space of FRESH architectures until April 2023.
The work of the Gravity and Equilibrium collections helps the viewer to question their own view of nature in its raw state. The reading grid remains wide but induces the need to pause and to take the time to question what we are looking at and to analyse what feeling is envoked - It’s a contemplative work. The objects are frozen yet the textures and colors are dynamic in their purity and honesty.
Camille situates her gesture in the representation of an abstract nature but structured and independent of the gaze of men. The bark of the mulberry tree captured in an in-between glass joins the stopping of a scientific image of the constant development of the elements, as if we had paused to analyse a chosen element of the design of a world in constant expansion. The textures first catch the eye, that questions the design and with it the scale and colour.
This observation requires full concentration to allow for the feeling of visual noises to permeate the listener.
